Locks cycle shop of 28 King St Sandwich in Kent is a small family run bike shop. Inside is larger than expected and rooms with a variety of bikes, tandems, frames and antique bikes. Locks specialize in custom building of tandems, undoubtably the best in the country. Arthur Lock and his wife gave us a cup of tea and introduced us to Martyn who built the tandem to our spec and gave much helpful advice. We wanted a light but stable tandem, good brakes (1 for Sheila) couplers to divide into 3 for car, train, or aircraft. Sheila wanted a ladyback (no crossbar) & I wanted a lower crossbar to ease getting my leg over at my age! We wanted internal gears (rholoff - like Sturmey-Archer but 14 gears rather than 3). We were measured from top to toe, results fed into a computer design program. We took Martyn's advice on saddles, wheels, brakes and handlebars etc. We are absolutely delighted with the result, all we hoped for and it rides llke a dream. Sheila (the stoker} has a disc brake for the back wheel and a saddle thudbuster to ease bumps & potholes. The saddles are like ramjets with an opening underneath at the front, ducting cool air out through diagonal slits to cool our nether regions! We have had this new tandem since March and have been training regularly at enjoying every moment... The only thing we must remember is to check the couplers don't work loose but this has never been a problem. |
